PROGRAMS AND PRESENTERS

Water Penetration in Stucco and Faux Stone Cladding
Why, what to look for and what to do about it.
(How to report it)

Mark F. Williams & Russell Graham

This session includes classroom training and a presentation/ tour of the Williams Building Diagnostics Laboratory testing and diagnostic facility. At the lab the WBD staff provides hands on training using mocked up sections of walls of various types with embedded moisture sensors. They expose the sections to varying weather simulations to find where and how water penetrates and accumulates in any given wall system. Remedial repair solutions are also investigated and tested the same way. The lab is near the hotel. Transportation will be provided.

Mark F. Williams, FAIA, is the founder and owner of Building Diagnostic Technologies, He is a registered architect and Fellow of the American Institute of Architects. His primary focus for nearly 30 years has been diagnosing, remediating, and preventing water-related building enclosure failures. Mr. Williams has performed over 4,500 building diagnostic investigations in the U.S., Canada and Europe. He has also presented his "lessons learned" in numerous publications on various construction materials, as well as presentations to ASTM and ASHRAE technical symposia, and to industry gatherings across the country. Mr. Williams also holds several U.S. patents for products to improve the performance of building walls and for related moisture management.

Green Architecture
What is it? How do you inspect it? Where will it go from here?

Charlie Szoradi

This session will cover the key information to update Home Inspectors on the new 'green' opportunities so that they can more effectively and accurately answer questions if and when they arise from homeowners. Workshop attendees will also gain perspective on data that can be extracted from utility bills to determine Home Heating Indexes, Base Load Electric and Water Consumption all in one effort to ensure that Home Inspectors know the 'eco-landscape' and 'jargon' of energy efficiency. Attendees will also learn over 100 real world tactics from high performance shower heads to PV and Thermal solar panels to save homeowners money, and attendees may even be inspired to consider implementing some of the tactics on their own homes.

The workshop will cover key topics such as:
  • Heating, Cooling, & Ventilating Installation (HVAC)
  • Insulation and air Sealing
  • Appliances
  • Air Quality
  • Natural Light

Charlie Szoradi brings multiple decades of hands on experience to the culture of sustainable living and cost-savings for home design and remodeling. He focuses on 'high performance' residential architecture. He has taken a leadership role at the national and regional level. In 2009, Charlie was elected to the Board of the Sustainable Business Network and selected as a member of the Green Economy Task Force, with direct participation on the Capitol Hill Delegation. Charlie is the founder and President of GREENandSAVE and he also serves as the Chief Instructor of the company's Eco Academy. Charlie has simply dedicated his career to green innovation.
